Purpose of Special Education Services  

Prince Edward County Public Schools understands that some children have unique and specific educational needs. These children require specialized services in order to succeed in school. These are the children who are found eligible for special education and related services.

Prince Edward County Public Schools provides special education and related services to all eligible children with disabilities in Prince Edward County from ages 2 through 21 who need a structured education program in order to address their areas of diagnosed disabilities.

 
Special Education Services  
A child may be found eligible for services as a child with:
 
* autism
* deafness
* deaf-blindness
* developmental delay
* emotional disturbance
* hearing impairment
* mental retardation
* multiple disabilities
* orthopedic impairment
* other health impairment
* severe disability
* specific learning disability
* speech/language impairment
* traumatic brain injury
* visual impairment including blindness
 
Special education is specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.  
 
Special Education Referral Process

Referrals for special education and related services may be initiated by school personnel, parents, legal guardians, or community agencies. The process is initiated by a referral to the child study committee at each school. Referral forms are located in the main office of each school and the office of the Coordinator of Special Education.

Special Education Advisory Committee
  • The purpose of the Special Education Advisory Committee is to: advise the school division in the education of children with disabilities,

  • assist in the formulation and development of long range plans,

  • participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the needs of children with disabilities,

  • and inform parents and the community of local, state, and federal special education issues.

Members of the Special Education Advisory Committee include concerned parents, students and community members. School personnel are consultants for the committee. The committee meets four times during the school year in the School Board Office.
